Brendan Mayle Kor (SG): Forever Young

August 12, 2022 in Photography

ABOUT THE ART

”Got my mum and dad to wear my stuff and took photos of them.” - Mayle on his parents (repping thetoxicfriends.co)

ABOUT THE ARTIST

You want quirky? You got it. Brendan Mayle Co is a Singaporean artist, although multi-hyphenate would probably be the best way to describe him. Brendan’s artistic approach is a molotov cocktail ready to set the scene on fire - bold colours and outrageous concepts, Brendan’s art makes sense to any common viewer, but his dedication and technicality to his craft ensures that his works are vividly burnt into the mind of those who come across it.

Feline Lim (SG): This is Singapore

August 05, 2022 in Photography

ABOUT THE ART

This week we celebrate Singapore, and acknowledge the things that make up this incredible island state. Enter into Singaporean photo journalist, Feline Lim’s viewfinder. These are snapshots from her personal growing collection, simply titled ‘daily life’.

Often posted on her Instagram account with nary a caption, these photos speak for themselves. To an outsider, they offer a glimpse into our country’s culture and living conditions; to the rest of us more acquainted with Singapore’s idiosyncrasies, Feline’s work is very simply, home lor.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Feline is a photographer and visual artist based in Singapore. She started her photography career at Singapore’s national broadsheet, The Straits Times, where she was hired as an intern for six months in 2017 before returning to the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information to complete her degree in photojournalism.

In the same year, she attended the school's top journalism programme, GO-FAR (Going Overseas For Advanced Reporting), where she did a feature on South Korea's growing solo economy that was published in TODAY. She later went on to pursue and self-publish a photojournalism thesis project on gambling addiction. Prior to graduation in 2018, she started working as a photographer for Reuters to cover stories both locally and abroad. Her time at the company has also seen her work as a TV news producer with Reuters Videeo Network, and a multimedia journalist for Reuters Plus, the agency’s branded content arm.

214 (CN): Time is so long, but Summer so short

July 29, 2022 in Photography

ABOUT THE ART

A growing project that saw its start in 2016, ‘下河 summertime’ is a photo series by anonymous photographer 214. A collection of sun-kissed skin (too much even for the likes of Instagram’s policies), warbly self portraits and self-insertions into animal photography, 214 captures the fleeting tenderness of a languid summertime hidden from most prying eyes.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

214 is a photographer who was born in Guizhou Province in 1990. They resigned from a countryside government in 2017. In July of the same year, they won the 40th Japan Photographic New Cosmos Excellence Award. In 2019,  214 held a solo exhibition "To Be An Evening breeze" at the jiazazhi Library. Again in January 2021,  they held a solo exhibition "Daily Invaders" in Random (Hangzhou). In June of 2021, 214 and Zhang Mo held a double-billed exhibition for "Summer Tales" in youlian studio (Shanghai). In August, the exhibition was also held in Chengdu’s Wuzao Space.

CHAO-YING (UK/CN): Miss Polly Had A Dolly

July 22, 2022 in Photography, Visual Art

ABOUT THE ART

”
Sky came to me after my dear friend Polly, a dressmaker and seamstress for dolls and silicone companions, could no longer keep her. Polly knew the last thing Sky wanted was to be re-homed with a man, and be subject to his whims, so I made the commitment to adopt her.

Last year, she flew here from Oregon, Portland, and has stayed with me ever since. As a nod to Polly, her place is at my sewing desk, in front of my machine. I love having her presence in my home studio, and I find myself missing her unexplainable presence when I'm away. “ - Chao-Ying on Sky and their relationship at Hospitalfield House

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Chao-Ying Rao (Betty) is an East Asian multi-disciplinary artist. A 2020 Glasgow School of Art graduate with a BA(Hons) in Painting and Printmaking, Betty also holds an MA(Hons) in Philosophy and English Literature from the University of Edinburgh. She lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland.

Betty’s research interests tend to circulate around fringe and contentious topics as she seeks to analyse our habitual discomforts. She’s fascinated by their undertones, and finds them to speak volumes about our cultural anxieties and shared values. Partly influenced by her experience in the sex industry where she spent a good decade of her life, her practice combines her lived experiences alongside questions of censorship, objectification, fetishisation and bodily autonomy.

Since graduation, Betty has completed the graduate residency at Hospitalfield in Arbroath. She is currently serving on the committee of Glasgow’s Transmission Gallery. Betty is also the branch organiser for the trade union United Sex Workers.

Kara Inez (SG/MY): I'm a Blob

July 15, 2022 in Visual Art

ABOUT THE ART

”The collection of grotesque sculptures is a manifestation of my physical and emotional struggles living with Endometriosis, a severely painful and crippling condition that 1/10 women suffer from. They invoke the feeling of disgust in the viewer which forces them to question the reasons behind their personal repulsion towards these bodily forms that rattle the social order.” - Kara Inez

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kara Inez (b.1991) is a Malaysian artist based in Singapore who draws from her personal experiences to touch on issues surrounding the female body and mental health through mediums such as performance art and sculpture. She is known for the use of abject materials and silicone to create life-like grotesque bodily forms. Her works evoke the feeling of disgust in her audience as a means to challenge the social constructs set in place surrounding these suppressed topics. She graduated from Lasalle College of the Arts with a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Arts in 2019. Being the recipient of The Winston Oh Travel Award (2019), she ventured to Tirupati in South India to carry out research on the hair trade. Her works have been exhibited locally and internationally in galleries and exhibition spaces such as the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, S.E.A. Focus (Singapore), Art Expo Malaysia, Gajah Gallery (Singapore), nATTA Gallery (Bangkok), and White Box (Kuala Lumpur). She will be taking part in the upcoming exhibition, Blended Tongue, This Humid House (Paris), on the 24th-26th of Feb 2022.

Kensuke Koike (JP): Existence of the Unknown

July 08, 2022 in Photography, Visual Art

ABOUT THE ART

”Every frame represents a portion of their face, and maintains their facial characteristics. In the end and all together the frames reveal the never seen or dreamt aspect of themselves: real and at the same time not real, but nevertheless existing even if unknown.” - Kensuke Koike on ‘No One Knows’

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kensuke Koike (b.1980, Japan) creates unique artwork by manipulating found, vintage, photographic material. Kensuke’s approach to the medium revolves around the idea of using the assets found within an image to create something new and contemporary. The process for the artist often starts as a puzzle begging to be solved with each image setting its own unique challenges.

Antibart (SG): Gimp Me More

July 01, 2022 in Film & Animation

ABOUT THE ART

”Mimicking the style and look of Jordan Wolfson's robotic sculptures, Bart Seng Wen Long's fashion film forces its viewer to relax into a more voyeuristic approach, subjecting his audience to observe the protagonist's daring poses and sexually suggestive actions.” - Fashion Film Showcase on Bart’s Short Film '人在江湖 身不由己 (or, Eat My Lanjiao, I Really Want You To)'

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born and bred in Singapore, Bart is currently based in London having graduated from the University of the Arts London with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art Photography. Conspiring with the photographic, moving images and literary nonfiction, his practice attempts to interact with/interrogate both canonic art history and contemporary (sub)cultures from a position of queerness, alterity, tensions and humble irreverence. With an approach to art-making that centres the failure of re-representation, re-reproduction, and mistranslation across mediums, aesthetics and contexts, Bart hopes to reveal unexpected modes of feeling and being, desiring and labouring. Bart was recently selected to be part of Dazed x Circa’s Class of 2021, and is co-curator of Kawaii Agency. His work has been featured on SHOWstudio, Times Out Singapore, Female, British Journal of Photography and Dazed.

Agan Harahap (ID): Fun At Funerals

June 17, 2022 in Photography

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

“Agan Harahap reads the rapidly occurring change in our life’s behaviour and the chaotic condition caused by the pandemic as a moment of mourning. Pixy Liao (CN/US): Grabbed By The Balls

June 10, 2022 in Photography

ABOUT THE ART

“As a woman brought up in China, I used to think I could only love someone who is older and more mature than me, who can be my protector and mentor. Then I met my current boyfriend, Moro. Since he is 5 years younger than me, I felt that the whole concept of relationships changed, all the way around. I became a person who has more authority & power. One of my male friends even questioned how I could choose a boyfriend the way a man would choose a girlfriend. And I thought, "Damn right. That’s exactly what I’m doing, & why not!"

I started to experiment with this relationship. I would set up all kinds of situations for Moro and me to perform in the photos. My photos explore the alternative possibilities of heterosexual relationships. They question what is the norm of heterosexual relationships. What will happen if man & woman exchange their roles of sex & roles of power? Because my boyfriend is Japanese, and I am Chinese, this project also describes a love and hate relationship.”

Alvin Lau (MY): How Gentrification Fragments Us

April 22, 2022 in Photography

ABOUT THE COLLECTION ‘SENTUL’

“I’ve walked the surrounding streets capturing the mood and sense of change; a cow refusing to eat, a washed out tarmac littered with construction tracks and fragments of how nature has tried to remain present. As the work progressed , it became apparent on how much this place meant to me.” - Alvin Lau (MY)

ABOUT THE ARTIST

The main frame within Alvin’s work is a constant exploration amongst and within the idea of life and death. His work derives from the influence of movie making / narrative based short essays. Largely his photographic approach comes from the idea of setting up research based journals with the idea of intertwining ideas that are loosely based on the format on how the mind conjures a dream sequence and the liminality of how reality functions as a whole entity. Commonly inspired from his older practice of documentary photography , his current practice has taken a shift into the consideration of documenting ideas and condensing narratives with the usage of visual images.

Alvin has participated in a photography masterclass with celebrated US photographer Maggie Steber at OBSCURA Festival in 2015. He subsequently was selected to represent Malaysia at the Southeast Asian Masterclass, a programme backed by Goethe-Institut Malaysia, Ostkreuz Photographers’ Agency, Berlin and OBSCURA Festival. He has also won the Kuala Lumpur Photo Awards, Asia Photographer of the Year 2015, as well as the IPA Photography Scholarship 2017. As of recently his work is being showcased at Jeonju International Photo Festival and Landskrona Photo Festival and Ilham Gallery.

Yawny (SG): Surrealism & Loneliness in the City

April 15, 2022 in Visual Art

ABOUT THE ART
“Working on a series that captures moments of urban isolation. As cities are becoming more and more developed, we are witnessing an increase in the number of isolated individuals. How do we deal with this more subtle pandemic? ” - yawny.jpg

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Yawny
plays seriously by creating surreal dreamscapes in an attempt to make sense of non-sense. His work consists of mostly illustrations of the unknown, as an attempt to capture the absurdity of life and how it can either be a motivating source of fascination or one of paralysing terror. While the work may depict surreal subject matter, it is deeply rooted in experiences that are human. Each image can be interpreted as a celebration of existence, perhaps even as encouragement to carry on despite the odds. Yawny is always a work in progress, wandering and piecing things together, diverging from a plan, sometimes not even beginning with one. Yawny is a process of trying to make connections along the way, failing most of the time, hoping for the best - isn't that all we can truly do?

Pauline Wong (SG): Wilderness & Domestication at Play

April 08, 2022 in Photography

ABOUT THE ART

““PLAY” is a photo series that documents my pet hamster’s daily rhythm like a performance to probe into the interlocking features of wilderness and domesticity.” - Pauline Wong

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Pauline Wong recently graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts (Distinction), specialising in Art Photography from LASALLE College of the Arts. Rooted in the practice of storytelling, Pauline’s art focuses on various types of spaces, physically, mentally and digitally, in hopes of reemerging conversations of the overlooked things and issues in the human species. Pauline was part of the *SCAPE Community Arts Residency programme.
